Im staining some bare wood ive had to use some filler over nails my problem is u can see were been filled?

the filler i have used just dosent seem to be takin the wood stain says on tin it okay for stain its a coloured stain a bit darker than the bare wood ive sanded down perfect but when put on stain and is dry the filled areas apear lighter its my parents house and have spent alot of money on all the wood HELP what am i doin wrong?Im staining some bare wood ive had to use some filler over nails my problem is u can see were been filled?
I had the same problem. A carpenter I asked said that does happen with filler. He suggested that I get wood shavings(from a saw) and mix with a little Elmers glue fill the wood with the mixture let dry then stain.Im staining some bare wood ive had to use some filler over nails my problem is u can see were been filled?
Did you countersink the nails prior to filling? If not you will get the problem described.

You should have filled the nail holes with a colored putty to match the stain AFTER you stained the wood. Wood fillers will not except the stain the same as the wood as you found out. You could try the stain pens or worst case scenario dig the filler out and fil it in with colored putty.
you should've used Epoxy wood filling.


You can solve the problem with either wood caps that or pens or the cheap way is Scuff Coat that's ment for shoes.. it comes in lots of colors and you shouldn't have a problem getting a match! Then cover with turtle wax! As Shell Buzzy would say.. It's That Easy!
Why don't you add some of the stain to the filler just enough to do the door and then stain over that when it is dry, saves you paying for coloured filler and it works in my house.
use a product called famo wood or drill out your holes and dowel with the same wood if you use the famowood pick a color that is close to the wood and add stain to the filler until it blends this is what we pro's do in the business
The stain is going to absorb in the filler differently than the wood and I doubt there's much you can do about that.





My BFs a carpenter and he mixes sawdust with wood glue for a better looking filler. Might be too late for that now but for future reference.





Depending on the style you're going for, sometimes the filled nail holes can add to a rustic look.

Make your own filler by using some saw dust from the wood your sanding/cutting and mix with some wood glue until it becomes a good paste, fill your holes with this paste, allow to set then stain as directed.
Go to LOWES and get some ';wood pens';. All it is, is color for wood, in a marker, and you can take it and match it up to what ever color it is you have, and dab it on there and it should come close to what you want...

I know what you mean. There are some fillers that are already tinted. Maybe you could find something that is alot closer to the color you want. If it already has a little tint to it maybe it will be darker when you stain it. m
Go buy wood filler in a color close to the color of your stain. The universal cream colored stuff sucks for staining. or try several different brands on a scrap piece of wood to see which one works best for you.
go to your kids bedroom and borrow a brown felt tip pen it works a treat
if you have a spare piece of timber take it to a joiners and ask them to make some 'plugs' these will then match.
you can buy some stuff called brummer its a pro filler you buy it the same colour as you are staining your wood it will blend in
I think maybe you have used the wrong type of filler, polly filler for example a light colour will have to be covered a couple of times with stain to hide it . many fillers are available in different colours from diy stores did you have a good look? hope your parents are happy with your efforts pps check the stain and filler to see if they are both the same base ie oil or water.
